Bucknell Women's Golfers Finish Strong at Big South Championship
April 15, 2009
NINETY-SIX, S.C. - Led by a 77 from freshman Brittany Rendell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and a 78 from senior Deirdre Moran (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame), the Bucknell women's golf team closed with a solid round of 316 and moved back up to sixth place as the 2009 Big South Championship came to an end Wednesday at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor. Bucknell's final-round score was the fourth-best in the field, and it was the team's fourth-best showing in seven appearances at the Big South Championship. The Bison turned in that strong finish without the services of their No. 1 player, sophomore Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland), who could not go due to illness. Freshmen Minjoo Lee (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and Kelsey Meybin (Midlothian, Va./Saint Gertrude) also finished with solid rounds, posting 80 and 81, respectively. Those two both finished in the top 20 in their first Big South Championship appearances. Meybin finished 16th with a 54-hole total of 240, while Lee was 18th at 243. Signaling that the future of Bison women's golf looks promising, a different freshman posted the team's low round each day of the tournament. On Monday it was Meybin with a 78, on Tuesday Lee led the way with a 76, and on Wednesday it was Rendell with a 77. Moran, the team's lone senior starter, had her best round of the season in her final collegiate appearance. Moran and Rendell tied for 26th place with final tallies of 249. Bucknell shot 333-327-316 for a 54-hole total of 976. The Bison entered the final round one shot behind sixth-place High Point, which shot 325 on Wednesday. Coastal Carolina closed with a 300 for a final total of 911, good for an 18-stroke win over runner-up Charleston Southern. Winthrop took third at 935, followed by Radford (951), Gardner-Webb (971), Bucknell (976), High Point (984), Presbyterian (1006) and Holy Cross (1087). Presbyterian's scores were not counted officially, as the Blue Hose are still in their Division I transitional phase.
Coastal Carolina's Aruka Felgueroso won the individual title by two shots over Charleston Southern's Olivia Higgins. The Chanticleers had four players place in the top five individually. |
