Sept. 30, 2012
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. --The Bucknell women's golf team improved its score for the second straight day, posting a 311 in the third and final round of the Nittany Lion Invitational on Sunday. Leading the way was junior Lauren Bernard with a 1-over-par 73, while classmate Bridget Wilcox recorded her third straight round in the 70s with a 78.
Wilcox was the low Bison for the week, shooting 79-79-78 for a 54-hole total of 236. Bernard and junior Kasha Scott were a stroke behind at 237. Scott made headlines on Saturday with a 1-under 71, her first career sub-par round. She finished with an 80 on Sunday.
Bernard made six birdies in her final round. She was 5-over after a bogey on No. 6, her 11th hole of the day. But Bernard finished with four birdies and three pars over her last seven holes.
Both of Bucknell's first-year players in the lineup finished well. After opening 80-91, Meghan Garanich duplicated her first-round score with another 80. She got off to a great start with a birdie on her first hole of the day at No. 15. Jen Lee closed with an 81, her best score of the week. Lexi Klein added an 87 for the Bison.
Host Penn State ran away with both the team and individual titles. The Nittany Lions posted a 1-under 287 team score on Sunday, and their 2-under 862 total was 24 better than runner-up Harvard, which closed with a 4-under 284. Old Dominion finished third at 892, followed by Collage of Charleston at 895 and Minnesota at 898.
Bucknell's 953 was good for 16th place, once behind Ohio University and five back of William & Mary.
Penn State's Ellen Ceresko finished off a wire-to-wire victory with a 2-under 70. Her 8-under 208 was seven better than Kelly Shon of Princeton and Christina Vosters of Penn State. The low round of the day was a 65 from Columbia's Michelle Piyapattra.
The Bison have two more fall tournaments, Oct. 15-16 at the MAC Preview in Ohio and Oct. 21-22 at the Palmetto Invitational at Kiawah Island, S.C.
