Bucknell's Amy Loughney Qualifies for U.S. Women's Amateur Golf Championship
July 14, 2006 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic), a member of the Bison women's golf team, shot a 78 to finish tied for fourth at the U.S. Women's Amateur Sectional Qualifier at Butler Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pa., earlier this week to qualify for the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, which will be held Aug. 7-13 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore. Loughney, who will be a junior for the Bison this year, tied with Kate Scarpetta for fourth in the field of 31 golfers Tuesday. The top four finishers automatically advanced to the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, but the third-place finisher declined the invitation, allowing both Loughney and Scarpetta to advance without a playoff. Katharina Schallenberg and Erin Thorne tied for first with matching 74 scores. The 106th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship will feature stroke play the first two days with the top 64 players in the 156-player field advancing to match play. Portions of the match play will be televised live on the Golf Channel. Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, the site of Tiger Woods' 1996 U.S. Amateur Championship win, will become the only golf facility in the country to host six United States Golf Association Championships in the last 10 years. The course is expected to play about 6,500 yards. Loughney will be accompanied to Oregon by her mother, Geraldine, brother, Donnie, and father, Donald, who will also serve as her caddie.
