WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Bucknell women's lacrosse team fought back from a 10-4 deficit to close the gap to two, but American held on for a 13-9 victory in Patriot League action on Saturday, March 15, 2003. The game was BU's fourth in seven days as the squad falls to 1-3 on the year and 0-1 in conference action.

Katy Zaweski and Rebecca Copeland put American up 2-0 early, before the Bison got on the board on a free position shot by sophomore Andrea Paraud. Bucknell evened the score on a goal by junior Meredith Wright, but AU's Laura Repoli put the Eagles back on top just 25 seconds later. The teams continued to battle through the first half until Jamie Crean gave American the lead for good at 5-4 with a free position goal with 1:45 to go until halftime.

The Eagles opened the second half with five-straight goals to jump out to a commanding 10-4 lead. The Orange and Blue responded with four goals of their own to get back in the game at 10-8. Four different players tallied during the stretch, started by junior Laura Nuss on a Paraud assist just 20 seconds after American had reached the six-goal advantage. Paraud then took a pass from sophomore Ellen Kurkowski for her second goal of the game. Senior Suzzane Raffaele made it 10-7 with a score at the 17:22 mark, before assisting junior Amy Hasler with 16:09 to play for the last goal of the run.

American stopped the spurt with a Repoli goal less than a minute later. Both teams went quiet offensively for nearly seven minutes before the Eagles got goals from Gina Riitano and Tara Michael to go back ahead 13-8.

Hasler scored for Bucknell with just over three minutes left in the game, but AU was able to control the rest of the play and hold on for the 13-9 victory.

American dominated in draw controls with 17 to only seven for BU. The Eagles also had 35 grounds balls while the Bison had 22. Senior Nicole Kallis had a solid game, making 12 saves for Bucknell and Kathleen Finnegan made seven stops for AU.

Bucknell is back in action on Saturday, March 22, when it hosts Lafayette for a Patriot League showdown at 12:00 p.m. The contest against the Leopards, the defending Patriot League champions, will be broadcast live on the radio on WMLP-1380 AM by the Voice of the Bison, Doug Birdsong. The pre-game show will begin at 11:45 a.m.
