Women's Lacrosse Team Gets First Victory Of Season Over St. Mary's, 8-6, In Final Contest Of Spring Break Trip
March 16, 2001
St. Mary's, Calif. - This evening the Bucknell women's lacrosse team finally scratched the win column by knocking off a tough St. Mary's team, 8-6. The victory comes on the final day of the Orange and Blue's trip to California, the Bison return to Bucknell with a 1-3 overall record. Senior Ashley Evans (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) led the Herd to their first victory of the season by finding the back of the net three times in the game. Also scoring key goals in the contest for Bucknell was freshman Laura Nuss (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) who recorded two goals against St. Mary's. This contest however was won by a strong defense and the key to Bucknell's defense was sophomore netminder Nicole Kallis (Stevensville, Md./St. Mary's). After a rocky start to the season, Kallis regained last season's form and stopped 14 St. Mary's shots while only letting six past. Rounding out the scoring for Bucknell was senior Kari Evans (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty), sophomore Suzanne Raffaele (Springfield, Pa./Archmere Academy), and freshman Amy Hafets (Columbia, Md./Hammond) with one goal each. Handing out assists in the contest was junior Melissa Montefusco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) with three and classmate Jennifer Gianis (Summit, N.J./Kent Place) recorded one hand out.
The Bucknell women's lacrosse team will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts Ohio University on Tuesday, March 20, at 4:00 p.m. on the Bucknell West Fields.
