LEWISBURG, Pa. - Three Bucknell lacrosse players - two men and one woman - were honored with weekly awards by the Patriot League on Monday. Sophomore goalie Matt Baran (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) was named the league's defensive player of the week, while freshmen Brian Gargan (Baltimore, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's) and Katie Edge (McLean, Va./St. Stephens St. Agnes) were picked as freshmen of the week. All three Bison were honored for the first time in their careers.

Both Bison teams went 1-1 last week and are now 3-3 on the season. The men's squad fell at No. 2 Maryland 14-7 last Wednesday before routing Holy Cross 18-5 in Worcester, Mass., on Saturday. The women's squad dropped an 11-6 decision to Columbia in West Palm Beach, Fla., last Monday, then defeated Lafayette 16-9 Saturday for Bucknell's first-ever win over the Leopards in 26 tries.

Baran, in his first year as Bucknell's starting goalie after replacing former All-American Justin Sussman, stopped 15 shots against Maryland's high-powered attack, then was called upon to make five saves in the win over Holy Cross over the weekend. Baran is 3-3 in six starts with a .571 save percentage.

Gargan has also started all six games for Bucknell as a freshman and has shown lots of promise. He scored twice against Maryland and was Bucknell's lone multi-goal scorer in the game. Then he added two goals and an assist in the blowout of Holy Cross on Saturday. For the season, Gargan has eight goals and two assists and ranks fourth on the team with 10 points.

Edge took over the scoring lead on the Bison women's team with a five-goal, one-assist showing against Lafayette on Saturday. It was her second five-goal performance of the season. With the game knotted at 4-all, Edge scored twice in a span of just 1:22 to give Bucknell the lead for good, then she scored again just before halftime to provide the Bison with a commanding 10-5 cushion. She now has 16 goals and four assists for 20 points on the year and ranks third in the league in scoring and fourth in goals.

Just missing player of the week honors on the men's side was junior attack Chris Cara (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), who was beaten out by Navy's Joe Bossi. Cara had a career-high 10 points against Holy Cross and tied the Patriot League record with eight assists in the contest. He fell just one shy of the Bucknell single-game records for both assists and points in a game.

Cara's 37 points currently leads the nation. Only six games into his junior year, Cara is already tied for second on Bucknell's career assist chart and third in Patriot League history with 82. His 143 career points rank tied for fourth in Bucknell history and eighth in Patriot League history.

Bucknell's men return to action on Tuesday night at Pennsylvania. Game time in Philadelphia is set for 7 p.m. The women are off until Saturday when they visit Holy Cross at noon.
