April 24, 2012
LEWISBURG, Pa. - It was a big day for Bucknell sophomore midfielder Katelyn Miller (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh), who was named to the Women's Lacrosse All-Patriot League Second Team on Tuesday morning, followed a few hours later by the announcement that Miller is the Patriot League's 2012 Women's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Miller, who leads the Bison in ground balls and caused turnovers and ranks second in goals and points, earned her first career all-conference citation. She was joined on the 12-person Patriot League All-Academic Team by classmate Lindsey Ferro (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep).
Miller has started all 16 games for the Bison this season and has produced 32 goals and nine assists for 41 total points. She ranks third in the Patriot League with 22 caused turnovers, and her 32 ground balls are fifth-most in the conference.
Miller enjoyed a career-best eight-point afternoon with four goals and four assists to go along with eight draw controls in a win over Presbyterian back in March. She also tallied four goals against Manhattan and Binghamton and tied a school record with six caused turnovers against George Washington. Miller recorded seven ground balls in a win over Saint Francis.
With one game left to play in her sophomore season, Miller already ranks eighth on Bucknell's career draw controls list with 65, and she now has 78 career points on 56 goals and 22 assists.
A biology and psychology double-major with a 3.91 cumulative grade-point average, Miller serves as a student athletic trainer at Bucknell, and this summer she will be doing research on cardiology and cholesterol at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She volunteers at the Lewisburg Food Bank and at Our Daily Bread, a homeless shelter in Baltimore.
Bucknell has now claimed seven Patriot League Women's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipients, and three in the last four years. Alyssa DeLorenz claimed the honor in 2009 and 2011, joining previous winners Suzanne Raffaele (2003), Amy Green (1997) and Tricia Way (1993, 1994).
Ferro joins Miller as first-time selections on the Patriot League All-Academic Team. Ferro is majoring in business management with marketing concentration and a minor in Spanish, and she has a stellar 3.80 cumulative GPA. On the field she is a key member of the Bison attack unit, and she has five goals and 18 assists for 23 points in 14 games this season. Ferro ranks fourth in the Patriot League in assists per game. She dished out four assists and scored a goal in the win over Presbyterian, and she had back-to-back two-goal games against Holy Cross and Lafayette in Patriot League play.
Bucknell is 4-12 on the season heading into Tuesday's season finale against Howard at 5 p.m.
