Bucknell Women's Soccer Claims Big 1-0 Win at Army
Oct. 22, 2009
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Kelliann Doherty (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) scored her third goal of the season early in the second half, sending the Bison women's soccer team to a key conference road win over defending champion Army on Thursday night at Clinton Field. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Bison, who are now 9-6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Patriot League. Bucknell temporarily took over sole possession of first place in the Patriot League standings, as 3-1 American is off until Friday at Lafayette. Regardless, it was a big three points on the road for the Bison, who now have 12 points with just two regular-season games remaining. Bucknell failed to score a goal in two games against Army last season, spanning more than 214 minutes of play. The Black Knights defeated the Bison 1-0 in overtime in the regular-season meeting at Emmitt Field, then the two teams played to a scoreless draw in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals before Army prevailed in penalty kicks. The Bison took a measure of revenge in this one, outshooting Army (6-9-2, 1-3-1) 17-6 on the night. The Black Knights managed only three shots on frame, and senior keeper Kathryn Sutton gobbled them all up with ease en route to her third shutout of the season. Despite a 10-4 shot edge in the first half, Bucknell went to the locker room locked up in a scoreless draw. That changed 12 minutes into the second stanza, when Brooke Stokes (Gladwyne, Pa./The Shipley School) sent in a cross from the right side of the box. Doherty ran to the near post and headed it home. In the 77th minute, Doherty thought she had a second goal, but it was waved off. Kayla Yee (Centennial, Colo./Heritage) headed a ball off the crossbar and Doherty tapped in the rebound, but Yee was flagged for offsides.
In the final few minutes the Bison survived a flurry of four straight Army corner kicks. The last two came in the final minute of play, but Bucknell prevented the Black Knights from getting off a shot. Bucknell returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Holy Cross for a 1 p.m. contest. The Crusaders fell to Colgate 2-1 in double overtime on Thursday night. |
