Bucknell's Christa Matlack Named to Women's Soccer All-Region Team
Dec. 8, 2009
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell junior Christa Matlack (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) has been named to the National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA) All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team. Matlack, a second-team honoree, was the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year in 2009.
Matlack becomes the fifth Bucknell women’s soccer student-athlete, and the third in the last four years, to earn all-region honors. Jennifer Dervarics was a second-team choice last season, and Nicole Marotta was a third-team pick in 2006. Other Bison all-region honorees were Savannah Rennels in 2001 (third team) and Lisa Gibbons in 1994 (first team).
Also voted the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year back in August, Matlack leads the Bison and ranked among the conference leaders in both goals (9) and points (20) per game (16). She was especially hot late in the season, as she had eight goals and two assists over the final nine games. In conference play, Matlack logged two-goal games in victories over Lafayette, Navy and Holy Cross.
Matlack, who also generated more shot attempts than any other player in the league, earned a spot on the all-conference first team for the second year in a row. It was the third straight year that Bucknell has claimed the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, as Dervarics won the award in both 2007 and 2008. Gibbons is the only other Bison to earn the honor, that coming in 1993.
Matlack also moved into the top 12 on Bucknell’s career charts in goals, assists and points. With another year still play, she already ranks eighth in goals with 25, tied for 12th in assists with 11 and seventh in points with 61.
Bucknell finished the 2009 season with a 10-8-1 overall record, 5-2 in the Patriot League. The Bison reached the 10-win plateau and qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the fifth year in a row under coach Ben Landis.
