Softball Team Drops First Game in Extra Innings
March 12, 2001 FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Bucknell softball team got its season started with a game against Northern Kentucky on Monday, March 12, at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The Bison suffered a 2-1 setback in extra innings to the Norse. BU struck first in the game, scoring a run in the top of the second inning. The Orange and Blue put together a two-out rally in the inning, getting back-to-back singles from freshman Jenna Fitch (Wayne, Pa./The Shipley School) and junior Kelly Dugan (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley). Sophomore Jacqueline Trapp (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) followed with a shot to the shortstop that scored Fitch for a 1-0 Bucknell lead. The Bison carried the one-point lead into the bottom of the sixth inning behind the pitching of sophomore Brandi Porter (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro). Porter went the distance on the mound, striking out five batters and allowing five hits in 7 2/3 innings. Northern Kentucky tied the game with two hits in the sixth. After a scoreless seventh, the two teams headed to extra innings. Bucknell came up empty in its half of the inning, but the Norse ended the game when Kerry McKee scored on a sacrifice fly to cross the plate with the winning run. Bucknell falls to 0-1 and will play St. Peter's at 11:00 a.m.
