Bucknell Softball Drops a Pair of One Run Decisions at Lehigh
April 27, 2002
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Bucknell softball team dropped a pair of one-run decisions at Lehigh on Saturday, April 27. The Bison fell 1-0 in the opener and dropped a 5-4 decision to the Mountain Hawks in the nightcap. Playing for a chance to advance to the Patriot League playoffs, the Bison squad battled the first-place Mountain Hawks for a full seven innings in game one. The two teams played to a scoreless tie through four full innings before Lehigh struck in the bottom of the fifth. Shannon Long led off the fifth with a double to centerfield. One out later, Shana Treon delivered an RBI triple to left centerfield to put the only run of the game on the board. The Mountain Hawks threatened again in the frame when Liz Gripp attempted to sacrifice Treon home, but the Orange and Blue defense alertly threw home to prevent the insurance run from scoring. The Bison had their best opportunity in the top of the seventh when junior Meredith Gill led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Lehigh pitcher Jenny Bender preserved the win, however, getting the next two batters out. Bucknell's Kelli Haskins took the loss on the mound, giving up five hits while striking out five. Bender was the winner, recording 10 strikeouts while allowing five Bison hits. In the nightcap, the Mountain Hawks wasted little time getting on the board, striking for four runs on four hits and one error in the bottom of the first.
The 4-0 lead stood until the Orange and Blue turned the tables and collected four hits and scored four runs of their own in the top of the sixth. Senior Jenna Demetriades led off the frame with a walk. One out later, Gill drew another walk to put runners on first and second. With two outs, sophomore Jenna Fitch stepped in and delivered the first hit of the inning to left center, scoring Demetriades. Senior Kelly Dugan followed with another RBI single, before sophomore Kristen Potts singled to load the bases.
After senior Lauren Titus sent an RBI single up the middle, Lehigh pitcher Emily Ling was replaced by Danielle Resovich. Senior Barb Wood was the first batter to face Resovich, and the third baseman drew a walk to plate the tying run. Lehigh regained the lead in its half of the inning, getting four hits and scoring once in the frame. Bucknell again threatened in the seventh when sophomore Angela Stackhouse led off the inning with a double to left centerfield. Gill sacrificed Stackhouse to third for the first out of the inning, but Resovich settled down to strike out sophomore Erin Doyle for the second out and got Fitch to ground out to first to end the contest. Junior Brandi Porter was the losing pitcher, allowing nine hits and striking out five. With her five strikeouts, Porter broke her own single-season strikeout record set a year ago with 104 to date. Resovich picked up the win for Lehigh, surrendering one hit and striking out one in 1.1 innings of work. Bucknell falls to 12-30 overall and 5-13 in the Patriot League. The Bison will attempt to play their way into the Patriot League playoffs with another doubleheader against the Mountain Hawks (31-14, 15-3) on Sunday, April 28, beginning at 1:00 p.m. |
