Bison Softball Ends Season with 3-1 Loss to Colgate at PL Tournament
May 1, 2004
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Freshman Lauren Litts connected for her fourth home run of the season in the second inning, but the 1-0 lead was short lived and the Bucknell softball team eventually gave way to Colgate, 3-1, in the second game of the Patriot League Softball Tournament on Saturday, May 1. The contest was BU's second of the day in the double elimination tournament after falling to top-seed Lehigh, 5-0, in the opener. Litts' blast to left centerfield in the bottom of the second gave the Bison their first lead of the day. Her hit was one of four by Bucknell in the game. Sophomore Lauren Wible went 1-for-3, while senior Angela Stackhouse ended her career with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. The Raiders came right back with a run in the top of the third to tie the contest 1-1. Pitcher Kate Howard helped herself with a leadoff ground-rule double to left center, and after being sacrificed to third by Kim Olmstead, scored on Rachel Smith's RBI single. Colgate tacked on another run in the top of the fifth when Olmstead, who led off the inning with a triple, came across on Nichole Rawson's single to left field. The Raiders made it 3-1 in their half of the sixth when Olmstead came through again with a bloop single to right center to plate Kirstie Kenton who led off the frame with a single up the middle.
The Orange and Blue made things interesting in their final at bat. After sitting the heart of Colgate's lineup down in order in the top of the frame to stay within striking distance, the Bison offense stepped in for one final attempt at the victory. Sophomore Kris Devore was awarded first after getting hit by a pitch, and two outs later, the squad continued its unconventional rally when freshman Michelle Danish struck out swinging, but made it to first on a wild pitch. With the winning run at the plate, Howard induced junior Jill Pompeii into a game-ending foul fly ball to third.
Williams took the loss for BU, going all seven innings, giving up 10 hits and three runs while striking out two. Howard went the distance for Colgate, allowing just four hits and one run, while fanning six Bison batters. Bucknell concludes its season at 14-26 overall. Colgate is 34-16. |
