Bucknell Softball Closes 2009 Season With 4-1 Loss to Lafayette
May 8, 2009
![]() BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Brittany Schlorff (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro Horsham) scored the Bison's only run as Bucknell softball's season came to an end with a 4-1 loss to Lafayette at Kaufman Field on Friday. Schlorff came home on a fielder's choice from Jessie Snyder (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium) in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the late-game heroics were too little, too late for the Orange and Blue, which complete the year with a 19-32 record. Bucknell seemed to have a solid handle on the contest until a series of fielding errors in the third inning put it behind 4-0. Jane Messersmith (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) walked Christina Giambrone to load the bases. That base-on-balls came back to haunt the Bison on the next batter, Stacey Kushner, who singled in two runs. Giambrone scored on a throwing error, giving Lafayette (17-28) the 3-0 edge. The Leopards scored their final run in the third inning as well, as Kushner came home on a passed ball. Four Leopards crossed the plate, but only one of those runs was earned. The Bison's defense improved drastically after the third-inning hiccup. The fourth ended quickly, as Messersmith got two batters to ground out and Ashley Carlson (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) made a basket catch in right field to end the inning. Mary Pavlovich (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) flashed some leather in the fifth, turning an inning-ending double play. The junior made the force out at third before throwing Kushner out at first. Much like their gloves, the Bison's bats heated up late in the game. Pavlovich reached on a single to the third baseman. She was replaced on the base paths by Schlorff, who advanced to second as the pinch hitting Alison Ford (Suison, Calif./Fairfield) singled through the left side. Snyder then reached on the fielder's choice, and Lauren Fry (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) loaded the bases on a catcher's interference. With two outs on the board, the Bison were unable to bring in another run, marking the end of their 2009 schedule. Fry, Messersmith, Pavlovich and Ford recorded one hit apiece, the only for Bucknell. Kasey Karr (10-14) earned the win for the Leopards, allowing no earned runs on four hits and striking out seven. Messersmith took the loss, giving up one earned run on four hits. The loss was the second of the Patriot League Tournament for Bucknell. The Bison fell 6-2 to Lehigh in the morning contest despite a two-RBI triple from Kristin Frick (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan). Lafayette will meet Lehigh in the Championship at 11 a.m. Saturday.
