Bucknell Softball Announces Class of 2013
March 6, 2009 LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell softball program has yet to play a game on its home field in 2009, but the Bison are already looking toward the future. Bucknell recently announced its newest group of incoming student-athletes, the six-person Class of 2013. “The entire staff is excited about this group of quality student-athletes. The will have big shoes to fill as I graduate my first recruiting class, but we feel they are all up to the task,” said head coach Heather Rakosik, who is in her fifth season with the Orange and Blue. “As a group they will surely bring superior athleticism and fundamentals, as well as that blue-collar work ethic and attitude we are looking for.” The newest Bison hail from five different states and feature three state champions, five all-county or all-state selections and five National Honor Society members. Following is an alphabetical list of the seven Bucknell softball recruits that comprise the Class of 2013: Bridget Gates (P) – Milford, Conn./Academy of Our Lady of Mercy Lauralton Hall Class of 2013 Bios:
Rakosik on Gates: “Bridget is a savvy, accomplished pitcher. She knows how to win and is a major competitor. It is already evident that she has the work ethic and skills that it takes to succeed at this level. Coach (Samantha) Kszepka and I are very much looking forward to having the opportunity to coach Bridget.” Cassie Greenhawk (Oxford, Md./Easton) – Outfield/Second Base … member of the 2008 2A State Champion team … 2008 Louisville Slugger Second Team All-Southern Region … Easton High School MVP in 2008 … three-time Minds in Motion Scholar-Athlete and two-time NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete … hit .653 as a junior … Maryland Distinguished Scholar Honorable Mention … Principal’s Honor Roll 2005-08 … honor roll student … member of National Honor Society … plays travel softball with the Virginia Stars Gold. Rakosik on Greenhawk: “Cassie’s versatility and speed will ease the loss of some key outfielders and speed to graduation. She is a very accomplished slapper (at the plate) and keeps the defense guessing. Cassie is a true student of the game having been coached by her mother at Easton High School.” Mary Horton (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) – Outfield/Middle Infield … four-year letterwinner … 2008 All-County Second Team selection … hit .464 with a .525 on-base percentage and 32 RBI in 2008 … member of St. Thomas Calini track and field … earned the 100+ Hours Community Service Award … Junior Classical League (Latin Club) member … member of National Honor Society and National Latin Honor Society … plays travel softball with the Florida Fury. Rakosik on Horton: “Mary is an all-around strong athlete with impeccable fundamentals. She is a left-handed hitter with true power and will make a nice addition to our team’s offensive ability. I have no doubt that Mary will bring a lot to our team on both sides of the ball.” Alex MacLean (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) – Pitcher … two-time Express Times All-Area and Morning Call All-Area teams … 2008 Second team Northampton Division Pitcher … member of the 2007 LVC Conference Champion team … 2007 First Team LVC Northampton Division Pitcher … NHS Courier Freshman Female Athlete of the Year in 2006 … posted an ERA of .71 in 2007 and .75 in 2008 as a junior … three-year officer in student government, serving as secretary as a sophomore, vice president as a junior and president as a senior … plays travel softball with the Sellersville Belles. Rakosik on MacLean: “Alex is an all-round great kid. She is a perfect fit for Bucknell and our program. Her composure and presence on the mound are unmatched. I have no doubt that Alex will make the transition to Division I college softball well.” Laura Sandford (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) – Outfield/Second Base … member of the 2006 New Jersey Group I State Champion team … also named Third Team Ocean Count and Second Team All-Conference in 2006 … two-time First Team All-Conference (2007, 2008) … earned 2008 Warrior Award … three-year letterwinner in field hockey and served as team captain in 2008 … 2007 Second Team All-Conference in field hockey … serves as a New Jersey Girls’ State Delegate and senior class representative … member of National Honor Society … plays travel softball with the New Jersey Breakers. Rakosik on Sandford: “It was obvious from the first time Laura stepped foot on campus and interacted with the team that she would be a perfect fit. Laura comes from a well-respected travel ball program in the New Jersey Breakers and knows what it takes to succeed at this level. She is a player who has no problem getting dirty and making things happen.” Kathryn Wilkinson (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) – Outfield …awarded all-County Honorable Mention in 2008 … hit .419 in 2008 with 22 runs batted it and a .551 on-base percentage … high school’s team finished season 25-5 in 2008 … earned the 100+ Hours Community Service Award … Cum Laude in the National Latin Exam … member of the Junior Classical league and National Honor Society – veritas chapter … plays travel softball with the Florida Fury. Rakosik on Wilkinson: “Kathryn will be a strong addition to our outfield. She has some serious power at the plate and an unbelievably strong, accurate arm. In addition, she is a stellar student who is also fully committed to excelling on the playing field.” |
