Bison Women's Swimming and Diving in Second After First Day of Bucknell Invitational
Nov. 16, 2012
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Elizabeth Porcellio won the 200-yard IM, junior Kelly Pontecorvo finished second in the 500 free and sophomore Katie Hetherington claimed second in three-meter diving to lead the Bison women's swimming and diving team to a second-place standing after Friday's first day of the three-day Bucknell Invitational at Kinney Natatorium. Delaware leads the tightly bunched team standings, just 17 points ahead of the Bison. Third-place La Salle is less than 15 points behind Bucknell. Three individual swimming events, two relays and one diving competition were contested on Friday. Competitors from La Salle won the 200 free relay, 500 free, 50 free and 400 medley relay. Delaware's Caitlin Stockwell captured diving, while Porcellio won the 200 IM by 1.19 seconds over La Salle's Jessica Simunek. Porcellio, who also won the morning prelim and was part of two top-four relays, posted a time of 2 minutes, 5.74 seconds to earn the gold medal. Freshman Ashley Henderson was not far behind in fourth place as Bucknell had two swimmers in the "A" final of both the 200 IM and 500 free. Henderson's time of 2:07.30 places her sixth in program history. Porcellio was already listed second with a time of 2:03.84 at the 2011 Patriot League Championships. Henderson was one of two freshmen to post a program top-10 time on Friday as classmate Emma Levendoski recorded a time of 57.13 in the 100 back on the leadoff leg of the 400 medley relay. That time ranks fifth in program history and it helped the 400 medley relay of her, Morgan Oxley, Porcellio and Lauren Perry record the No. 10 time in school annals (3:53.80) en route to a third-place showing. Pontecorvo placed second in the 500 free after winning the prelim. There were only three sub-5:00 times Friday and she had two of them. Stephanie Koziol, who was third in the prelims, finished seventh in the evening finals. Hetherington's second-place showing off the three-meter board featured her scoring a season-high 255.15. Tara Boyle was eighth in the event after finishing fifth in the prelims. Perry was Bucknell's top finisher in the 50 free (23.95). She was just .10 off her career-best time that ranks eighth in program history. The Bucknell Invitational will continue Saturday. Prelims are at 10 a.m. and finals are at 6 p.m. at Kinney Natatorium.
