Bucknell Swimming & Diving Completes Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's swimming & diving teams concluded the 2008 portion of the 2008-09 season on Sunday, Nov. 23, hosting the final day of the Bucknell Invitational. The Bison men finished first out of five teams, with a score of 950, while the Bison women placed third (666.5) out of six teams, behind Towson (1012.5) and James Madison (714). Bucknell sophomore Gonzalo DeLeon (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) set a new school record in the 200-yard backstroke, winning the event with a time of one minute, 49.33 seconds. The previous record was 1:50.11, held by Steve Droste since 1993. DeLeon finished second in the 400 IM (4:04.90), touching the wall with the third best time in Bison history. Freshman Jonathan Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) placed fifth (4:08.13), but his preliminary time of 4:06.07 is the fourth best time in Bison history, while classmate David Newton (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) placed sixth (4:10.39) with the 11th fastest time. Bison junior Luke Trafton (Bath, Maine/Morse) finished fourth (4:08.11) has the second best time for the Orange and Blue in the event (4:04.18), recorded in 2007. Podniesinski finished sixth in the 500 free (4:45.17), but his preliminary time of 4:38.75 is ninth best in Bison history. Trafton finished third (4:39.20) today and hold's the Bucknell record in the 500 free (4:28.97), set last spring. Concluding action on the men's side, Bison freshman Taylor Harris (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) finished second in the 100 fly (50.50), with the sixth best time in school history. In women's action, the Bucknell quartet of Molly Goebel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), Megan Mongan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), Susan Horstmann (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Courtney Warren (Montour Falls, N.Y./Watkins Glen) finished third in the 400 free relay, and their time of 3:33.24 ranks ninth best in the Bison record books. Mongan finished in a tie for fourth in the 100 free (53.13), while Goebel finished eighth (54.57). Goebel's preliminary time (52.69) is fifth best in Bison history. Mongan currently has the fourth best time (52.25). Warren won the "B" Final in the 100 free (53.27), and her time is the 10th fastest in program history. Warren also finished fourth in the 200 back (2:07.81), where her preliminary time of 2:07.17 is eighth best on Bucknell's top-ten chart. Classmate Abigail Atkinson (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) finished third in the race on Sunday (2:07.26) and has the sixth best time in school history (2:05.10). Bison sophomore Macey Keath (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) finished second in the 200 breast (2:23.18), recording the fourth fastest time in team history. Finally, in diving, Bucknell junior Allison FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa./Episcopal Academy) finished second in the three-meter dive, and her score of 247.95 ranks fourth in Bison history.
