Jan. 23, 2010 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Bucknell women’s tennis team opened its spring season Saturday at Penn State and lost to the Nittany Lions by a 6-1 margin. Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) earned the lone point for the Bison with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles. Calcaterra, a senior who was 3-6 in singles competition during the fall, defeated Penn State freshman Stephanie Tarle. At the time their match ended, the Bison trailed 5-0 in the team score. Penn State (1-0) captured the doubles point, winning all two of the three matches. Bucknell's victory came at No. 3 doubles where Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) and Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) won by an 8-3 margin. The Bison also challenged at No. 1, where Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul’s School for Girls) lost 8-5 to Sarah Lotto and Lauren McCarthy. Varela registered the closest singles match, dropping a 6-0, 6-7(5); 10-3, decision to McCarthy at No. 1. Varela trailed 2-1, 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4 during the second set, and eventually took a 6-5 lead and claimed the victory after McCarthy tied it up at 6-6. However, in the tiebreaker, McCarthy upended Varela 10-3 to conclude both the individual match and the overall match. No other Bison player won a set, and Lucido was forced to retire due to injury in the first set of her match at No. 2.
