Bucknell Women's Tennis Wraps Up Day One At Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's tennis team played two rounds of doubles to open the weekend at the Cornell Invitational, Friday evening. Freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Pauls School For Girls) and sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) advanced to the semifinal in Flight 1 doubles, to be played Saturday morning.
Lucido and Varela had a bye in the first round of Flight 1 doubles, and went on to defeat Niki Flach (last year's Patriot League Player of the Year) and Brooke Jones of Army, 8-4. The pair is set to face No. 2 seeded Sinziana Chris and Shayna Miller of Cornell in the semifinal round Saturday morning.
Also in Flight 1 doubles, sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) had a bye in the first round, but fell in the second round to Lauren Bates and Anna Edelman of Binghamton, 8-3. The pair played a back draw match against Anne Houghton and Sarah Giles-Madden of Army, falling 8-6.
In Flight 2 doubles, senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) and freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) fell in the second round (after a bye in the first) to Ashley Ebbert and Melissa Orteza of Cornell, 8-2. The pair went on to win a back draw match against Kashou and Nicole Scarangella of Binghamton, 8-1. Baffa and Dwojewski will play in the semifinal round of the consolation bracket, Saturday morning, against Josephine Bergman and Anastasiia Rukavshykova of Temple.
Sophomores Kirstyn Sotak and Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) fell to Diana Alquero of Army and Weatherly Schwab of Cornell in the second round (after a bye in the first) of flight 2 doubles, 8-6. The pair was defeated in a back draw match against Gayathri Balasundar and Danyelle Shapiro of Binghamton, 9-8 and 7-4 in a tie-breaker.
The Cornell Invitational will continue on Saturday and run through Sunday, Jan. 27.
