Bucknell Women's Tennis Slips 4-3 Against Binghamton
March 1, 2009
OLEAN, N.Y. – The Bucknell women’s tennis team came within a single match of its fourth consecutive victory but came up short in Olean, N.Y., falling 4-3 to Binghamton on Sunday. The Orange and Blue were led by a core of underclassmen as the team’s record dropped to 5-3 in the spring season. Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisnau, Maldova/Germantown Friends School) earned her second win in as many days. After claiming a straight-sets victory against St. Bonaventure on Saturday, the freshman defeated the Bearcats’ Basak Gone 7-6 (9). Iepuras maintained her momentum following the first-set tie break to take the second set and the match 6-4. The Bison also had a battle at the No. 6 singles position as Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) went the distance. Rottkamp looked to be in control early after opening the contest at 6-2, but the sophomore was unable to hold serve in the second set, allowing Binghamton’s Danyelle Shapiro to take the second at love. Rottkamp closed the match at 10-4. Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) claimed Bucknell’s third and final singles wins at the No. 1 position. The 6-4, 7-6 (8) win was her sixth of the year. Bucknell avoided a sweep in doubles action with an 8-2 win from Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul’s School for Girls). The duo defeated Gone and Marina Bykovskaya at second doubles. The Bison are back on the court on Thursday, March 5 when they host Towson. SINGLES
