Bucknell Women's Tennis Loses to Dayton, 5-2

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Bucknell women's tennis team fell to Dayton, 5-2, in its spring break opener at the Hilton Head Tournament. Freshman Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) posted the lone singles victory of the match in the No.3 spot against Megan Gray, 6-3, 6-2, and teamed up with Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) to defeat Mackenzie Hoops and Nicole Dzubay, 8-4, in No. 2 doubles. In No. 1 doubles, the pair of Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) and Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) dropped Allysa Detroy and Kate Mellion, 8-2, which earned them the doubles point. Gamboa fell to Mellion in the No. 1 singles spot, 6-2, 6-3, while Detroy defeated Calcaterra, 6-4, 6-1, in No. 2 singles. Dzubay dropped Globerman, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 4 spot. JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) lost to Hoops, 7-5, 7-5, in the No. 5 spot, while Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) fell to Maggie Ernst in the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 1-6, 10-8. Bucknell, now 1-8 on the season, will battle Niagara on Wednesday, March 14, at 10 a.m. Doubles
