FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Bucknell women's tennis team claimed victories in two of the doubles matches and four singles matches went three sets, but the Bison (7-5) were unable to pull out a team win against Nova Southeastern University, falling 5-4 in Florida on Thursday. Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) each won two matches on the day.

Gamboa and Lucido started things off with a smooth 8-2 win in doubles over the Sharks' Ulia Talalenko and Edita Kulichova. Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) later tallied the Bison's second point of the day with an 8-6 doubles win over Justine Feaster and Karolina Porizkova.

Despite the convincing win in doubles, Lucido had a more difficult time at No. 2 singles. The sophomore was still able to pull out the three-set victory, however, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

At the No. 3 singles position, Gamboa defeated Feaster in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2.

The singles battles continued with Varela at the No. 1 spot. The junior came back from being down a set, taking the second at 7-5. Her opponent, Talalenko, held on in the third, however, finishing at 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisnau, Maldova/Germantown Friends School) and Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) also went the distance but with little luck. Iepuras fell to Porizkova (6-3, 2-6, 6-2) after dropping the first set, while Rottkamp fell to Elisa Leeder (4-6, 7-6, 6-3) despite taking the early one-set lead and forcing a second-set tie break.

The Bison return from their southern trip on Saturday, March 21 when they take on Villanova in Lewisburg.
