Bucknell Women's Tennis Falls to Fordham and NJIT

LEWISBURG, Pa - The Bucknell women's tennis team fell to Fordham 7-0, and to the New Jersey Institute of Technology, 5-2, in its home opener at the Bucknell Varsity Tennis Courts. The Bison fell to 2-11 on the season, while Rams and the Highlanders improve to 4-4 and 11-7, respectively. The team of sophomore Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) and freshman Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) posted doubles victories against Doina Sandor and Martina Featherston of Fordham, 8-3, while taking down NJIT's Julia Doci and Fatima Kasem, 8-3. Bucknell clinched the doubles point against Highlanders when the duo of sophomore Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) and Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) notched a No. 2 singles victory over Fanny Aizier and Isha Toor, 8-2. Gamboa would score the Bison's second point of the match when she defeated Aizier, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 2 singles spot, but NJIT would answer back by winning the next five singles matches. Against the Rams, the pair of junior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) and freshman, Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) lost a close No. 3 doubles match to Elizabeth Stall and Lisa Vulin, 8-6, in the No. 3 spot. Bucknell will battle Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday, April 4, at the Bucknell Varsity Tennis Courts. The match will begin at 4 p.m.
