Army Sweeps Bucknell Women's Tennis
April 1, 2006 WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's tennis team suffered a tough loss as it fell 7-0, to the defending league champions, Army, on Saturday afternoon at the Malek Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. The loss pushes the Bison to a current Patriot League record of 1-1. The Orange and Blue fought hard in the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots, but just could not finish with wins. Seniors Veronica Brown (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) and Chelsea Mills (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) battled in No. 1 and No. 2 as they fell on the short end of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-2 scores, respectively. Freshman Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) represented the Bison in the third slot, falling to Army's Sarah Giles-Madden 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles play, it was the duo of sophomore Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.J./Half Hollow Hills East) and JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) that turned in Bucknell's strongest match of the day. The pair kept it close in the No. 3, and were ahead 6-5, when the match was called to an end.
