Bucknell Women's Tennis Edged by Colgate, 4-3, in Patriot League Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team lost to Colgate, 4-3, in its Patriot League opener inside Gerhard Fieldhouse Sunday night. The Bison, now 3-12 (0-1 PL), will face Lehigh on Tuesday, Apr. 10, at 3 p.m., in Bethlehem, Pa. The Raiders improve to 9-7 (1-1 PL). Colgate earned the doubles point after winning two out of three matches. Sophomore Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) and freshman Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) fell to Jackie Couture and Elise Derose, 8-2, in the No. 1 spot, while the team of freshman Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and sophomore Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) were defeated by Samantha Inacker and Cameron Thaney in the No. 2 spot, 8-6. In the No. 3 spot, the team of junior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) and sophomore Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) picked up their third doubles victory of the season after taking down Erin Fenn and Jackie Stimmel, 8-7(7-4). In singles, Gamboa won her third straight match in the No. 2 spot over Derose, 6-1, 6-4, to make the score 1-1. Varela lost a close two set match to Couture, 7-6(4), 7-6(3), in the No. 1 spot. Calcaterra fell to Inacker in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 3 spot. Globerman dropped Fenn in the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-3, to make the score 3-2.
Thaney clinched the Colgate victory after defeating Baffa in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, in the No. 5 spot. Freshman Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) took down Carmeron Williams in three sets, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1, in the No. 6 spot.
