LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team fell, 5-2, to Pittsburgh Tuesday afternoon, making up last Friday's match which was postponed due to rain. The Bison were coming off a two-match winning streak bringing a 5-2 victory over Colgate on Saturday, April 5, and a 5-2 victory over Lehigh on Monday, April 7. The Orange and Blue now move to 7-7 on the season, while the Panthers now post a spring record of 10-7.

To open the afternoon, Pittsburgh took the doubles point for an early lead, winning doubles matches at all three positions. At the No. 1 spot, junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) were defeated by Pittsburgh's Kristy Borza and Elizabeth Adams, 8-0. The pair moved to 5-7 on the season and 1-4 at the No. 1 position. At No. 2, freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./Saint Paul's School for Girls) and freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) played together for the first time this season, falling to Sabrina Visram and Christie D'Achille, 8-3. At the No. 3 spot, senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) and sophomore Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) also paired for the first time this season and were defeated by Carlie Smith and Leah Friedman, 8-0.

In singles play, Bucknell picked up wins at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions. Lucido picked up her first win at the No. 2 position this season. She topped Vistram, 6-0, 7-6 (3), to move to 8-6 overall and 1-2 at No. 2. Freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) went 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, over Smith at No. 5 to post a team-high of nine singles wins this season. Rottkamp moved to 9-3 overall and 1-1 at No. 5.

 

 

At No. 1, Gamboa fell to Borza, 6-2, 7-6 (3), moving her to 4-8 overall and 0-3 at No. 1, while at No. 3, Calcaterra was defeated by Adams, bringing her to 6-8 overall and 2-3 at No. 3. At the No. 6 position, Pittsbugh's Friedman went 7-5, 6-4 over Baffa, taking Baffa's record to 2-5 overall and 0-2 at No. 6. Last off the court was Dwojewski at the No. 4 position. Dwojewski now holds a season record of 5-8 (1-3 at No. 4) after falling to D'Achille, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

The Bison will look to continue Patriot League play this weekend with a match against Army in West Point, N.Y., at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 12. Bucknell is on a two-match winning streak in league play, defeating both Colgate and Lehigh this past week.
