Bucknell Men's and Women's Tennis Teams Record 7-0 Sweeps Over Mount St. Mary's
April 15, 2004
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Though both teams had the Patriot League postseason door closed in front of them earlier this week, the Bucknell men's and women's tennis teams put another contest in their respective win columns with irrefutable clarity, each defeating visiting Mount St. Mary's 7-0 on Thursday afternoon. The Bucknell men (8-9) moved one match closer to a .500 record with three to play, and the women (15-3) continued their quest for a Bucknell-record 17 wins. Both Bucknell teams used the non-conference battle to gain some dual match experience for their reserve players. On the men's side, while regulars Gerald DiChiara and Asher Salam defeated Drew Arbeiter and Bob Cozzillio, 8-4, understudies Brian Cohen and Don Whaley fell to Phil Holliday and Chris Frein, 8-3, while rookies Wes Madara and Matt Kutner defeated Paul Stuart and Matt Ross, 8-3. For the women, two freshmen, Renee Clinton and Kelly Porter, fell at third doubles to Heather Whetstone and Alicia Patterson, 8-4, while their more experienced teammates secured the doubles point on courts one and two. Rheanna Gaskin and Samantha Berthod beat Katie Muething and Adrienne Harris, 8-1, while Chelsea Mills and Rebecca Kral defeated Jen Iosue and Whitney Edmonds, 8-1.
Most of the usual starting six for both teams returned for singles play. Tomorrow's match versus UMBC will be the last home contest for the Bison women, who will play only at Bloomsburg next Wednesday to close out the 2004 campaign. It will also be Senior Day for the only senior between both teams, captain Samantha Berthod. The men will host Binghamton on Sunday before going to Bloomsburg with the women next Wednesday to finish their year.
