Bucknell Women's Tennis Falls, 4-3, To Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team made up a postponed match against Villanova on Wednesday afternoon, dropping the match, 4-3, to the Wildcats, to move to 8-9 this season. To open the day, sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) paired for the first time this season to defeat Ashley Reed and Jaclyn Williamson by a score of 8-5. At No. 2, senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) and freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) moved to 4-9 this season, losing to Courtney Reed and Daniella Phillis by a score of 8-9. Villanova picked up the doubles point with a Bucknell forfeit at No. 3. In singles, Bucknell took three matches. At No. 1, Varela topped Carla Erksine, 6-2, 6-2, to improve to 7-4 this spring, while Gamboa defeated Emily Urda at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0, to bring her record to 6-9 in 2008. At No. 4, freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) was victorious over Williamson, 6-4, 6-2, to improve to 11-4 this season. Rounding out singles play, Dwojewski fell to Courtney Reed at No. 3, 6-4, 6-2, and Baffa dropped her match at No. 5, to Ashley Reed, 6-0, 6-2. After Wednesday's match, Varela now ties freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./Saint Paul's School for Girls) in doubles wins, picking up her 10th of the season on Wednesday afternoon. In singles, Rottkamp now posts a team-high of 11 wins this season. The Bison are now prepared to travel to West Point, N.Y. for the Patriot League tournament this weekend, April 18-20, hosted by Army. The No. 2 seeded Bison will play Saturday, April 19, at 3 p.m., against the winner of Friday's match between No. 3 seeded Colgate and No. 6 seeded Lafayette.
