Bucknell Women's Tennis Defeats Colgate, 4-0, To Advance To Championship Match Of PL Tournament

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's tennis team swept Colgate, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon in the semifinal match of the 2008 Patriot League tournament, hosted by Army. The No. 2 seeded Bison are now set to face top-seeded Army at 1 p.m., Sunday afternoon, for the championship match. Bucknell's No. 1 doubles team of freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) were first to finish their match, picking up an 8-1 win over Elise DeRose and Sam Inacker. To secure the doubles point, junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Green Gates School) and sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) defeated Cameron Williams and Stephanie Bender by a score of 8-4 at the second position. Senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) did not finish their match at No. 3, but were leading by a score of 6-2 over Erin Fenn and Isabel Riemer. In singles, Lucido was first off the court, defeating Riemer at No. 3, 6-3, 6-1. Varela finished next at the first position, topping DeRose by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Gamboa clinched the win for the Orange and Blue at the No. 2 position. She defeated Inacker, 6-2, 7-5, to make the final score 4-0 in favor of Bucknell. Although matches at the fourth, fifth and sixth positions did not finish, Bucknell was leading in all three contests. Calcaterra was ahead of Williams, 1-6, 6-3, 4-3, at No. 4, Dwojewski was leading Fenn, 6-4, 5-2, at No. 5 and freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) was ahead of Bender, 6-4, 5-2, at No. 6.
The No.1 and No. 2 seeds are now set to face off on Sunday afternoon for the championship. Bucknell will face Army at 1 p.m. in West Point for the conclusion of the league tournament. Singles
