Bison Women's Tennis Team Falls to UMBC, 6-1

BALTIMORE, Md. - On Saturday, the Bucknell women's tennis squad fell to UMBC, 6-1, in non-league action Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) posted the lone singles victory for the Bison in the No. 2 spot against Joy Adewumi, 6-4, 6-2. The Bison fell to 6-14 on the season, while the Retrievers improved to 10-5. In doubles, freshman Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) teamed with sophomore Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) to defeat Pascaline Cette and Alice Chen, 8-7(3), in the No. 1 spot. In the No. 2 spot, the pair of freshman Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Gamboa fell to Elizabeth Anderson and Adriana Fonseca, 8-7, while sophomore Tiffany Card (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and freshman Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) dropped a No. 3 doubles match to Joy Adewumi and Cornelia Carapcea, 8-1. In singles action, Varela fell to Chen in a two-set superbreaker, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7, in the No. 1 spot. Calcaterra was defeated by Cette, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 2 spot, while Globerman lost to Fonseca in the No. 4 spot, 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Kirstyn Sotak was defeated by Barbara Couto, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 5 spot, while sophomore Camille Simonetti fell to Anderson, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 6 spot.
Bucknell will be back in action on Tuesday, April 24, at 3 p.m. against Delaware in Newark, Del., for its final regular-season match. The Bison will then compete in the Patriot League Tournament next weekend where they will be the No. 3 seed.
