Bucknell Tennis Wins Six Matches at Rainy Bloomsburg Invite
Sept. 12, 2009
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Bucknell tennis fought with the rain on the first day of the Bloomsburg Invitational in Bloomsburg, Pa., on Saturday. The Bison women won six of their 10 singles matches against the host Huskies and Niagara. The foul weather prevented any Bucknell men from getting on the court.
Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) defeated Bloomsburg's Katie Hasyn in a tight three-set match. The junior took the first set in easy fashion, 6-2. She then hit a bump in the road as Hasyn pulled out the win in the second set with a tiebreak. Lucido fought back in the third, taking the super tiebreak 11-9.
Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) and Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) also pushed their respective matches to three sets. Only Tuzhikova was able to come through with the victory over Bloomsburg's Emily Palko. Tuzhikova battled back after dropping the first set in a tiebreak. The freshman then closed out the match 6-4 and 10-8.
Sotak was less lucky. Like her freshman teammate, she also lost the first set in a tiebreak. She came back strong in the second to take the second set off Niagara's Brittany Walters, 6-0. The final set was as competitive as the first, but Walters snuck through with the 11-9 win.
Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy), Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) and Liz Larkin (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) also earned wins for the Bison. They each earned straight-sets victories in their first matches of 2009.
The Bison will hope for better luck in the weather tomorrow for day two of the invitational. Both the men's and women's teams will be in action.
