BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bucknell women’s tennis continued its successful run at the Bloomsburg Invitational Sunday. Four Bison maintained their undefeated records in singles play, while five doubles teams earned their first wins of the 2009 season.

Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy), Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul’s School for Girls), Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and Daria Tuzhikova (Minsk, Belarus/Gymnasium No. 7) each claimed victory in their respective singles matches, helping them to go 3-0 in Bloomsburg over the weekend.

Varela, Lucido and Tuzhikova defeated their opponents in straight sets, but Rottkamp had to battle through three sets to hold onto the win. Against Niagra’s Alyssa Lucas, Rottkamp struggled in the early goings, dropping the first set 6-2. The second set proved to be more to Rottkamp’s liking. The junior claimed the second 6-3 to force a super tiebreak in which she stole the ultimate win 10-6.

Jennie Ciotti (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) won her first match in the Orange and Blue, defeating Niagara’s Emma Cunnington in straight sets. The freshman eased to the victory with a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Bucknell’s doubles teams also got underway. Varela teamed up with Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) to defeat Bloomsburg’s Katie Hasyn and Allison Carney, 8-5. They were joined in the victory celebration by Lucido and Tuzhikova with an 8-6 win over their Huskies opponent.

Rottkamp partnered with Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) in her opening doubles match, defeating Bloomsburg 8-3. She later paired with Ciotti to defeat a second Bloomsburg team 8-6.

Dwojewski earned a second doubles victory, this time teamed with Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School), coming out on top of Niagara’s Raquel Solis and Brittany Walters 8-6.

In their next round of matches, the Bison women’s team will host the Bucknell Invitational Sept. 18-19.
