Bucknell Women's Tennis Hosts Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team was in action for the first time this fall, hosting the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, September 22-23. The tournament included individuals from Bucknell, Bloomsburg, Georgetown, Loyola, Marist, Pittsburgh, St. Joseph's and Villanova. Representing Bucknell at flight A are freshmen Nadezda Curcic (Serbia/3rd Belgrade) and Ashley Diers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day). Curcic dropped her first match, 6-1, 6-2, to Pittsburgh's Jill Williams, but came back to win her second match, 8-6 over Ashley Young of Villanova. Diers was a 6-1, 7-5 winner over Lydia Thomas of St. Joseph's and then dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Nikki Borza of Pittsburgh. Curcic and Diers teamed up to play at the A doubles flight, reaching the semi-finals with an 8-2 win over St. Joseph's and an 8-6 victory over Bloomsburg. The duo will face Georgetown in the finals on Sunday. At flight B, sophomore Samantha Berthod (White Plains, N.Y./Ursuline Academy) picked up a 6-0, 6-3 singles win over Marist's Kristy Salloum, before falling to Jessie Rybacki of Villanova, 6-2, 6-3. Senior captain Kristin Inglis (Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony) also played at the B flight, dropping a 6-3, 6-2 match to Julianne Bramante of Bloomsburg, and falling 8-1 to Margot Wallace of Loyola. Inglis and Berthod paired up in doubles action at flight B, losing 8-1 to Georgetown, before defeating Marist, 8-4.
The Bison were represented by freshman Tanya Sichko (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) and sophomore Kristen Pugno (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberley Academy) at singles flight C. Sichko made an impressive rookie debut, going undefeated on Saturday to play in the semi-finals on Sunday. She defeated St. Joseph's Katie Bobish, 6-2, 7-6 (3) in her opener and then knocked off Laura Pegula of Pittsburgh, 6-1, 7-6 (1). Pugno fell to Lara Madonia of Georgetown, 6-2,6-2, before dropping an 8-0 decision to Abby Height of Bloomsburg. Sichko and Pugno also paired up in doubles action at flight C. The duo posted a 2-0 record on the day, defeating Marist 8-3 and beating Bloomsburg 8-6 for a chanced at the title.
BU's final two competitors on the weekend are freshmen Christine Hill (St. Davids, Pa./Agnes) and Margaret Williams (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) at singles flight D. Hill lost to Villanova's Liz Farrell, 6-0, 6-2, and then dropped an 8-4 match to Brianne Douglas of Marist. Williams fell 6-2, 6-4 to Morgan Flezzani of Villanova, before losing to Beth Fulton of Bloomsburg, 8-0. The Orange and Blue low netters are in action again tomorrow, beginning at 9:00 a.m. |
