Bison Tennis Opens Bucknell Invitational With Round 1 Singles

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's tennis teams opened a three-day weekend at home on Friday, playing the first round of singles in the Bucknell Invitational. This weekend the Bison are hosting UConn, Quinnipiac, and NJIT for the round robin tournament.
The Bison men won seven out of their eight matches played on day one. In the No. 1 Flight, senior Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Country Day-Upper School) defeated Quinnipiac's John Hughes, 7-5, 2-6, 10-4. Bucknell's junior Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) played in the second flight for a 6-2, 6-0, win over Jonathan Lang of NJIT. Sophomore Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) also won his first match of the weekend in Flight 4 singles against Anthony Tunnero of NJIT, 6-3, 6-2.
Picking up a win for the Bison in the No. 5 Flight was freshman Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) against Christian Malerba of UConn (6-0, 7-6) and in Flight 6 was junior Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) against Quinnipiac's Joe Nuara, 6-2, 6-0. Senior Ben Young (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) went 6-0, 6-0, over Sidharth Verma (NJIT) in Flight 7 and junior Daniel Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic) defeated Dillon Kraus of Quinnipiac in Flight 8, 6-0, 7-5, to close out day one for the men.
On the women's side, Bucknell picked up three wins in the first round of singles. Junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) played in Flight 2 to defeat Dasa Stainimorivic of NJIT, 6-3, 7-5. Freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) topped Fanny Aizier of NJIT, 6-2, 4-6, 10-3, in Flight 4, while sophomore Kirstyn Sotak (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) won her match over Quinnipiac's Nikki Adams in Flight 8, 6-3, 6-3, to finish day one for the Bison.
The Bucknell Invitational will continue tomorrow with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles. The tournament will run through Sunday.
