Bucknell Women's Tennis Team Gets 4-3 Victory at St. Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team played its first dual match of the fall season, picking up a 4-3 win over St. Joseph's on Saturday afternoon. The Orange and Blue got three singles wins and took the doubles point with victories at the first and third flights to edge out the Hawks. With the victory, the Bison are 1-0 on the year.

At number one singles, freshman Nadezda Curcic (Serbia/3rd Belgrade) started things off with a 6-2 win in the first set against St. Joseph's Jance Hoy, and led 2-0 in the second set before Hoy retired, giving Curcic the win.

Second singles saw freshman Ashley Diers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day) drop a 2-6 decision in the opening set against Lydia Thomas, before reeling off victories in the next two, 6-3 and 7-5, to pick up the victory for the Bison. At third singles, sophomore Samantha Berthod (White Plains, N.Y./Ursuline Academy) dropped a tough 7-5, 2-6, 0-6 match to Pilar Glodzik, giving Bucknell its first loss in singles action.

Freshman Tanya Sichko (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) maintained her undefeated mark in fall season singles action, picking up a 7-5, 6-1 win over Jill Simodesjka at the fourth singles flight for Bucknell's final singles victory. Sophomore Kristen Pugno (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberley Academy) and freshman Christine Hill (St. Davids, Pa./Agnes) played at the fifth and sixth singles spots, respectively. Pugno fell 2-6, 2-6 to Katie Bobish and Hill suffered a 1-6, 3-6 setback against Michelle Savage.

Curcic and Diers teamed up at the first doubles flight to post a 9-7 win over Hoy and Glodzik. At second doubles, Berthod and Hill paired up, dropping a 2-8 match to Thomas and Bobish. The duo of Sichko and Pugno got BU's final victory, defeating Jamie Lomas and Alisa Paykos, 8-6 at the third doubles flight.

 

 

The Orange and Blue are in action again on Saturday, October 13, when they host Niagara and St. Francis (Pa.). The Bison will face Niagara at 9:00 a.m. and take on St. Francis (Pa.) at 4:00 p.m.
