Bucknell Women's Tennis Prepared For Two Road PL Matches This Weekend

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team is set to play two Patriot League matches this weekend and will look to maintain an undefeated record in league play. The Bison (7-7, 2-0 PL) will face Army in West Point, N.Y., on Saturday, April 12 at 9 a.m., and will take on Lafayette in Easton, Pa., on Sunday, April 13, at 10 a.m. Bucknell is coming off a 5-2 win over Lehigh this past Monday and a 5-2 loss against Pittsburgh this past Tuesday.

Bucknell Women's Tennis Notebook

Against Lehigh, April 7 -
- Bucknell defeated the Mountain Hawks, 5-2, moving to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in league play, while Lehigh moved to a record of 7-9 overall and 1-3 in the Patriot League.
- The Bison picked up the doubles point, winning at all three positions. Sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) won their seventh match in a row, defeating Ruthie Furman and Allison Schwartz, 8-1, at No. 1 to improve to 7-2 this spring. At No. 2, junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) went 8-2 over Julie Arthofer and Stacey Reich to move to 5-6 this season, while at No. 3, senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) and freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) topped Victoria Vityuk and Ariela Cohen, 8-4, making their record 3-7 in 2008.
- Bucknell went on to pick up four wins in singles play. Varela improved to 5-3 this season, defeating Schwartz, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1, while Gamboa went 6-0, 6-2 over Cohen at No. 2, to move to 4-7 overall and 4-5 at the No. 2 position. At No. 4, Calcaterra was victorious over Furman, 6-2, 6-4, to bring her to 6-7 overall, 4-4 at No. 4, and at the No. 6 spot, freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) defeated Reich, 6-2, 6-2, making her 8-3 overall and 7-2 at No. 6 this season.

 

 

Against Pittsburgh, April 8 -
- Bucknell fell, 5-2, to Pittsburgh, snapping a two-match winning streak that brought victories over Colgate and Lehigh. The Orange and Blue moved to 7-7 on the season, while the Panthers moved to a spring record of 10-7.
- In singles play, Bucknell picked up wins at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions. Lucido had her first win at the No. 2 position this season. She topped Sabrina Vistram, 6-0, 7-6 (3), to move to 8-6 overall and 1-2 at No. 2. Rottkamp went 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, over Carlie Smith at No. 5 to post a team-high of nine singles wins this season. Rottkamp moved to 9-3 overall and 1-1 at No. 5.

The Army Black Knights -
- The Black Knights lead the Patriot League with a record of 20-7 overall and 3-0 in league play.
- On Jan. 31, Army was picked first with 49 points and nine first-place votes.
- Last season, Bucknell was defeated by Army, 5-2, on April 14, 2007 and then again on April 30, 2007 in the Patriot League Tournament (4-0).
- In a series that began in 1990, Bucknell has defeated Army four times and has lost 21 matches against the Black Knights.

The Lafayette Leopards -
- The Leopards are currently last in the Patriot League with a record of 4-4 overall and 0-3 in league play.
- On Jan. 31, Lafayette was picked fifth with 17 points.
- Last season, Bucknell topped Lafayette, 6-0, on April 15, 2007.
- In a series that began in 1978, Bucknell has defeated Lafayette 15 times, lost 17 times, and tied once.

Bucknell Team Leaders -
- Lucido leads the Bison in doubles wins this season, with eight, while Varela follows with seven doubles wins. Rottkamp boasts a team-high of nine singles wins, while Lucido follows with eight.

- On Jan. 31, Bucknell was picked second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, with 40 points and two first-place votes. Army took the No. 1 spot with 49 points and nine first-place points. Colgate took third (35 points, one first-place vote), Lehigh was fourth (27 points), Lafayette was fifth (17 points) and Holy Cross rounded out the list in sixth (12 points).
- On Oct. 3, Lucido was named Patriot League Player of the Month for women's tennis. To open her collegiate career, Lucido posted a 10-2 combined record in September. She went 2-1 in singles and 8-1 in doubles when paired with Varela.

Looking Ahead -
- The Patriot League tournament is scheduled for April 18-20 in West Point, N.Y. and Bucknell will play additional matches against Delaware at home and Bloomsburg away, April 22 and April 23, respectively.
