Bucknell Women's Tennis Heads To Patriot League Tournament This Weekend

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team is prepared to travel to West Point, N.Y., this weekend, April 18-20, for the Patriot League Tournament, hosted by Army. The Bison (8-9, 3-1 PL) are currently ranked second in the league behind Army (22-7, 5-0) in first. Bucknell will start play on Saturday, taking on the winner of Friday's match between No. 3 Colgate and No. 6 Lafayette.

Weekend Schedule
Friday, April 18
- No. 4 Lehigh vs. No. 5 Holy Cross - 11 a.m.
- No. 3 Colgate vs. No. 6 Lafayette - 3 p.m.
Saturday, April 19
- No. 1 Army vs. Winner No. 4 Lehigh/No. 5 Holy Cross - 11 a.m.
- No. 2 Bucknell vs. Winner No. 3 Colgate/No. 6 Lafayette - 3 p.m.

Last Season at the Patriot League Tournament
- The Bison swept Holy Cross, 4-0, to move on and defeat Colgate, 4-3, in the semifinal match. Bucknell fell by a score of 4-0 to Army in the Championship match.

2008 Season Patriot League Regular Season Recap
Against Colgate, April 5
- Bucknell opened its Patriot League schedule with a 5-2 win against Colgate on the road.
- The Orange and Blue took the doubles point with a win at both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) added a sixth victory to their winning streak, defeating Samantha Inacker and Elise Derose, 8-4 at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 position, junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) defeated Cameron Williams and Stephanie Bender, 9-8 (7-4).
- In singles play, freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor/Cold Spring Harbor) was the first off the court, with a win against Jackie Stimmel, 6-1, 6-0. Lucido then picked up a win at the No. 3 position against Isabel Riemer, 6-3, 6-4. The next win for the Bison came from Varela at the No. 1 spot with a win against Derose 6-4, 7-5. Freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) went 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, against Erin Fenn at No. 5.
Against Lehigh, April 7
- The Bison defeated the Mountain Hawks, 5-2, at home.
- Bucknell picked up the doubles point, winning at all three positions. Varela and Lucido won their seventh match in a row, defeating Ruthie Furman and Allison Schwartz, 8-1, at No. 1. At No. 2, junior Gamboa and Calcaterra went 8-2 over Julie Arthofer and Stacey Reich, while at No. 3, senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) and Dwojewski topped Victoria Vityuk and Ariela Cohen, 8-4.
- Bucknell went on to pick up four wins in singles play. Varela defeated Schwartz, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1, while Gamboa went 6-0, 6-2 over Cohen at No. 2. At No. 4, Calcaterra was victorious over Furman, 6-2, 6-4, and at the sixth position, Rottkamp defeated Reich, 6-2, 6-2.
Against Army, April 12
- Bucknell suffered its first and only league loss of the season, 5-2, against Army on the road.
- The Black Knights took the doubles point, winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. At No. 2, Gamboa and Calcaterra picked up the lone doubles win for the Bison, beating Sarah Giles-Madden and Kristin Beehler by a score of 8-6.
- In singles, Bucknell picked up wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Gamboa had a win against Niki Flach, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 at No. 2, while Lucido picked up a win against Giles-Madden, 7-6 (8), 6-3.
Against Lafayette, April 13
- Bucknell had a 6-1 win over Lafayette on the road to secure a league record of 3-1.
- The Bison took the doubles point, winning at all three positions. Varela and Lucido went 8-1 over Ansley Scudder and Sarah Sykes at the first position, while Gamboa and Calcaterra picked up a win against Jacqui Bonder and Rachel Rohinsky by a score of 8-0 at No. 2. Rounding out doubles, Baffa and Dwojewski topped Kristie Cavanagh and Emily DeLuca by a score of 8-1.
- Bucknell swept five matches in singles play. First off the court was Rottkamp, defeating DeLuca at the sixth position by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Next, Lucido topped Bonder at No. 3, 6-0, 6-1, and Dwojewski had a win over Cavanagh, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5. Gamboa topped Sykes at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1, and Varela was victorious over Scudder at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1.

 

 

Bucknell Team Leaders
- Varela and Lucido are tied in doubles wins, picking up nine total this season. In singles, Rottkamp has posted a team-high of 11 wins this spring.

Honors for 2007-08 Season
- On Jan. 31, Bucknell was picked second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, with 40 points and two first-place votes. Army took the No. 1 spot with 49 points and nine first-place points. Colgate took third (35 points, one first-place vote), Lehigh was fourth (27 points), Lafayette was fifth (17 points) and Holy Cross rounded out the list in sixth (12 points).
- On Oct. 3, Lucido was named Patriot League Player of the Month for women's tennis. To open her collegiate career, Lucido posted a 10-2 combined record in September. She went 2-1 in singles and 8-1 in doubles when paired with Varela.

Looking Ahead
- Following the Patriot League tournament, Bucknell will play additional matches against Delaware at home and Bloomsburg away, April 22 and April 23, respectively.
