Bucknell Women's Tennis Grabs Five Patriot League Honors
May 5, 2009
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell’s women’s tennis program ended its 2009 spring season on a strong note, garnering five Patriot League annual awards. Senior Paulina Gamboa and junior Tania Varela landed on the All-Patriot League FirstTeam while sophomore Lauren Lucido and freshman Dumitrita Iepuras both earned Second Team All-Patriot League Second honors. Iepuras also won the Patriot League Rookie of the Year Award. Four All-Patriot League selections are the most ever for the Bison. Iepuras’ rookie honor is only the third time in Bucknell history that a Bison has been awarded this accomplishment. Varela won in 2007 and Veronica Brown won in 2003. Also earning a spot on the Patriot League’s second team, Iepuras opened up her career at Bucknell with a team-best .722 winning percentage, while compiling a 23-5 record in singles (15-5 this spring) and a 3-5 record in doubles. Earning first team honors for their third consecutive years, Gamboa and Varela have been dominant in both doubles and singles play this spring. The two Bison are the only two ever to earn All-Patriot League first team honors three times. Gamboa went 12-7 this spring in singles while also going 14-1 when paired with Lucido in the No. 1 flight of doubles. Varela and junior Carlin Calcaterra have compiled a 9-3 record in doubles this spring, while mostly playing from the No. 2 spot. In singles, Varela piled up a 13-3 record this spring as one of the six Bison with double-digit victories. Finishing up her tennis career, Gamboa is present on all of Bucknell’s career records lists. She’s fifth (63-61) all-time on Bucknell’s singles win list, third (72-56) on the all-time doubles list, and fourth (137-117) on the overall wins list.
Lucido’s second team selection is the second of her career as she won last year as well. She and Iepuras tied for the team-best singles record this spring with their 15-5 records. Lucido has compiled a .706 winning percentage in her two years at Bucknell and has a career record of 84-35, including her team-best 14-1 doubles record in the No. 1 spot this spring with Gamboa. Finishing their season with a record of 15-7, the Bison have their best record since the 2004-05 season. This is the fifth straight season that Bucknell has finished second to Army. The Bison’s spring season contained seven 7-0 victories and a five match winning streak, including eight of their last ten. First Team: Second Team: Player of the Year: Annie Houghton, Army
