    BISON NOTEBOOK

    • Varela and Calcaterra will take on Petra Dajevic and Ivana Tomaic of Radford in their first-round match at 9 a.m. on Friday. The winner of that match will face the winner of the Maryland vs. William and Mary match at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
    • Varela will play her first-round singles match later on Friday, going up against Marshall’s Isabell Raich at 4:30 p.m. Should Varela advance, her second-round contest is slated for 10 a.m. on Saturday.
    • Also attending the ITA Regional Championships at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center will be players from 25 other schools. Of those, the Bison have faced only Pittsburgh previously this season.
    • The doubles team of Varela and Calcaterra is 2-2 this fall with wins over opponents from Bloomsburg and Villanova. Despite having just a .500 record in the early goings, both Bison are ranked in the top 10 in career doubles victories at Bucknell. Varela is fifth (55-25), while Calcaterra ranks 11th (44-47).
    • Varela enters the tournament 8-3 in singles competition this fall. Most recently, the senior finished runner-up in the flight A singles of the Bucknell Invitational, falling to Elmine Botes of Fairleigh Dickinson in three sets. It was the second time this fall that Varela lost to Botes.
    • Varela broke the century mark in all-time victories earlier this season. With a 52-22 career singles record and a 55-25 career doubles record, she ranks sixth at Bucknell with a tally of 107-47.
    • Since the Bison were last on the court the first weekend of October, Dumitrita Iepuras (Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) was named the Patriot League Player of the Month. The sophomore finished the fall with an 11-2 singles record, including a title in the flight B singles draw at the Bucknell Invitational on Oct. 4.
    • Bucknell will not send any players to the men’s ITA Regional Championships in Norfolk, Va., this weekend. With the change in schedule, the men’s squad will be back on the court Jan. 23, 2010 when it travels to Philadelphia for a 3 p.m. match with Penn.

    UP NEXT
Like the Bison men, the women’s team will be return to the court for the spring portion of its schedule on Jan. 23. The women will head to University Park, Pa., to take on Penn State.
