Women Sit on Top of Patriot League Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The first day of competition of at the Outdoor Patriot League Track and Field Championships concluded on Friday evening for Bucknell at the Hart Center Track Complex in Worcester, Mass. The women currently lead their division with 68.50 total points earned, while on the men's side, the Bison sit in third with 25 The top six finishers in each event, aside from preliminary competition, are each awarded points with 10 for first, eight for second, six for third, four for fourth, two for fifth and one point for sixth place. For the women, junior Catherine Trentacoste (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) set a new Bucknell record in the 100-meter high hurdles, with a blazing ECAC Championship qualifying time of 14.25 seconds in the preliminaries, qualifying for Saturday's finals. Classmate Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler) also qualified for the finals in the race, finishing in 14.87. Buczko won the pole vault with a leap of 12 feet, 11 1/2 inches, breaking the Patriot League Championship record, which she set a year ago. The throwers swept the discus with junior Marjorie Grap (Van Etten, N.Y./Spencer-Van Etten) winning the gold, junior Kathleen Hart taking silver and sophomore Amanda Mockbee (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) finishing in third. Grap recorded a heave of 150-1, Hart, 134-4 and Mockbee, 132-1. The 4x800 team set an ECAC qualifying mark, on ist way to capturing the PL gold, while also setting the school's fourth-best time of 8:59.73. In the 10,000-meter run, junior Leanna Nastase (Beaverdale, Pa,/Forest Hills), senior Kayla Halloran (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) and freshman Gillian Nordquist (Clarkstown, Mich./Clarkstown) all set scoring times for the Bison. Nastase finished second with a time of 37:35.09, collecting eight points, Halloran finish fourth in 37:50.89 with four points, while Nordquist landed in fifth with two points in 37:59.77.
Sophomore Beverly Rogers (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) threw the javelin for 145-5 and a second-place finish. If the women can hang onto the lead, they will collect their third outdoor PL title. Junior Josh Kaehler (Hanover, Pa./South Western) won the men's javelin and moved up as the all-time second-best Bison in the event with a heave of 212-9. On the track, sophomore Wallace Campbell (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Acad.) took second in the 10,000 with a time of 31:12.95, while senior Kevin Fortkiewicz (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) took fifth, clocking in a time of 31:38.33. Sophomore Matt Johnson (Newburgh, N.Y./Marlboro Central) qualified for the finals in the 100 with a time of 11.10, while senior Matt Corbetta (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) earned a spot in the 200 (22.37). The 4x800 team hit the IC4A Championship qualifying mark with a time of 7:43.46, good enough for a fifth-place finish. Also scoring for the Orange and Blue was sophomore James Meyer (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Pacific Palisades) with a fifth-place mark in the discus of 144-9. Classmate David Mante (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) turned in a sixth-place finish in the pole vault, with a leap of 14-7 1/4. Action for both squads will resume and conclude on Saturday, opening with the decathlon 110 hurdles starting at 9 a.m. and ending with the women's 4x400 relay at 6:15 p.m. The PL Awards Ceremony will take place following the conclusion of the women's relay. |
