Frey Leads Bison Friday at the NCAA East Regional Championship Meet
May 29, 2009 GREENSBORO, N.C.— Bucknell opened up its first day of competition Friday at the NCAA East Regional Track and Field Championships at North Carolina A&T University's Irvin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C. with solid performances. The Bison were led by sophomore Rebecca Frey, who set an outdoor personal-best mark with her 12 foot, 0 inch clearance and had the highest opening height she's ever cleared. Frey's clearance on her first attempt allowed her to finish 19th overall and gave her the sole position of third-place on Bucknell's all-time performance list. “I know a lot of girls were seeded higher than me, but I had a lot of confidence going in with this kind of atmosphere and lots of good practice recently,” said Frey. Freshman Sarah Bella placed 26th in the women's discus with a day's best throw of 114-9. Bella was one of the six freshmen in the field of competitors. On the track, the Bison had sprinter senior Megan Hathaway and middle distance runner freshman Stephanie Fulmer competing in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs, respectively. Hathway fought herself into first place on the first lap of the two-lap race before leading the second group in fourth place and ultimately finishing strong in fifth place, crossing the line in 2 minutes, 12.91 seconds, in her heat and overall. Fulmer battled and finished 27th overall with a time of 4:43.11. Junior Steven Pierce and freshman Ted Heitzman competed in separate flights of the javelin throw. In the first flight, Heitzman produced a best throw of 171-7 to place ninth in his flight. Heitzman was one of only nine freshmen competing in the field of 30. In the second flight, Pierce, who has battled injury this spring, but has the second-best throw in Bucknell history (216-1), had a best throw of 182-5, for ninth place in the second of three flights.
Also in the throws, junior school-record holder and reigning Patriot League shot put champion, Timothy Medlock, placed 32nd with a 50-1 ¼ mark. It was the fifth time, in five attempts, this outdoor season that Medlock crested the 50-foot mark.
