AUSTIN, Texas - Bucknell senior Maria Garcia put one of her three tosses in regulation on Thursday in the preliminary round of the hammer throwing competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Austin, Texas. Her distance of 186'11", though, was not far enough to advance her to Saturday's final round.

The distance placed her 20th among the 29 competitors. Candice Scott of Florida won the preliminary competition with a top toss of 215'6". By comparison, Garcia's top throw this season of 202'8" at the Patriot League Championships would have placed her eighth in Thursday's meet. The top 12 throwers advance to Saturday's final.

Bucknell's other participant in the NCAA Championships, freshman pole vaulter Melanie Buczko, had her competition rained out Wednesday. The meet organizers decided late Wednesday to advance all 28 vaulters to the final competition on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Eastern.
