Bucknell's Melanie Buczko Earns Academic All-America Honors
June 27, 2007 LEWISBURG, Pa. - 2007 Bucknell graduate Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) of the women's track and field squad was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), on Thursday. She becomes the first female Bison track performer to earn a spot on the Academic All-America list since Becki Marshall and Kelly McConnell in 2002 and the 114th Academic All-American at Bucknell, which ranks fourth nationally among all Division I institutions in total number of Academic All-Americans. In the classroom, Buczko is a civil engineering major and holds a 3.71 grade-point average. As a sophomore and junior, she was named the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete. Buczko is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE). She received the Charles F. White Memorial Prize for Scholar-Athletes given to one male and female junior. The Butler, Pa., native earned the Moles Scholarship Award given for outstanding effort in working towards a career in construction engineering and management. At the 2007 Senior Athletics Awards Banquet, Buczko was presented with the Christy Mathewson Award, which goes to the outstanding male and female senior athletes. She has been listed on the Dean's List six out of seven semesters, while also earning a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in every season of her career. Buczko won three indoor and two outdoor Patriot League titles in the pole vault, while also posting a gold medal in the 60 hurdles over her four years at Bucknell. In 2004, she posted a first-place performance in the pole vault at the ECAC Outdoor Championships while also earning a first-place showing at the 2005 ECAC Indoor Championships.
Buczko, who is part of four Patriot League indoor and outdoor championships at Bucknell, is a four-time ECAC indoor All-East performer, while also earning spots as a 2004 Outdoor and 2005 Indoor NCAA Championship finalist. She was also a two-time All-East and three-time NCAA East Regional qualifier her career.
