Lewisburg, Pa. --- This evening the Bucknell volleyball team opened up Patriot League play by defeating Navy 3-0 (15-9, 15-4, 15-13), in Davis Gymnasium.

The Bison jumped off to a quick start when they won the first two sets 15-9 and 15-4, putting Navy in a must win position. The Midshipmen responded well by taking a quick 11-8 lead in the third stanza before the Orange and Blue took control, thanks to some good serving from junior Whitney Williams (LaJolla, Calif./LaJolla) and freshman Brandi Trapasso (N. Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda). Leading the way on the hitting front for the Bison was senior co-captain Brooke Bader (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) with a near perfect night, 11 kills on 21 attempts with no errors for a .524 hitting percentage. Williams moved one step closer to the third spot on the all-time list for set assists at Bucknell. She currently has 1324 career set assists and only needs three more to move ahead of Molly Brown '01.

The Navy Midshipmen were held together by the strong defense of three individuals, sophomore Erica McElroy, sophomore Jamie Leverentz, and senior Erin Musser. The three combined for 36 digs on the evening. Musser also led the Midshipmen with eight kills during the contest.

The volleyball team improves to 5-11 on the season and a 1-0 record in conference play. Navy falls to 6-9 on the season and 0-1 in the Patriot League. The Orange and Blue will play again this Tuesday, October 3 when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to play against Colgate at 7:00 p.m..
