Bucknell Volleyball Suffers Rare Loss to Lafayette
Oct. 1, 2004
EASTON, Pa. - Bucknell's Jackie Leahy cleared the 30-kill barrier for the first time in her career, but it wasn't enough to prevent Lafayette from snapping a 17-match losing streak to the Bison with a marathon five-game victory Friday night in Easton, Pa. The upstart Leopards, who last defeated Bucknell (7-6, 1-1 Patriot League) in 1992, let a two-games-to-none lead and two match points slip away and actually faced a match point themselves in the fifth and deciding game before scoring the final three points of the night. Now 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference, Lafayette won by game scores of 30-27, 30-26, 28-30, 26-30, 17-15. Leahy socked a career-high 31 kills, but the Bison, whose trademark this season had been a balanced offensive attack, managed only 36 kills from the remainder of the squad. Serve receive proved to be an important downfall as well, as Lafayette collected 17 aces on the night. Defensively, Carolyn Dougherty led the Bison with 25 digs and Amanda Grossman had a match-high eight blocks. Bucknell did show some resiliency despite the loss. After making up the two-game deficit, the Bison trailed 14-12 in the race to 15 in game five, but consecutive kills by Leahy and Sarah Groman knotted the contest. Another point gave Bucknell a match point at 15-14, but the Bison tipped a ball wide, and two points later the match ended on another hitting error. Veronica Canto-Ponce led Lafayette with 24 kills, while Shannon Fisher added 16 and Michaela Donohue totaled 14. Donohue, Canto-Ponce, Heidi Olichwier and Catherine Herschenroder logged four aces each, while Donohue led her team with 15 digs. Bucknell outhit Lafayette .238 to .221 and also led in digs and blocks. The Bison have another Patriot League road tilt on Saturday night against Lehigh at 7 p.m.
