Bucknell Volleyball Battles American Before Falling 3-1
Oct. 9, 2004
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Jackie Leahy tallied a team-high 20 kills and Chelsea Robertson contributed a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs, but it was not enough to overcome a powerful American team as the Eagles posted a 3-1 victory in a Patriot League volleyball match Saturday night in Davis Gym.
American, which improved to 53-0 all-time in Patriot League matches, won by game scores of 30-28, 26-30, 30-24 and 30-25. By winning the second game, the Bison became the 12th league opponent to take a game from the Eagles since they joined the Patriot League in 2001.
Leahy, who recorded her 1,000th career kill during Friday's 3-1 win over Navy, led Bucknell (9-7, 3-2 Patriot League) with 20 kills and tied American's Cutrina Biddulph for a game-high figure.
Robertson, who hit .250 for the match, was the only other Bison to reach double figures in kills. Jenna Henderson and Courtney Clark added nine and eight kills, respectively, as Bucknell totaled 59 kills as a team.
Setter Jessica Le led the Bison with 46 assists, while Carolyn Dougherty recorded a game-high 24 digs. Le also hit a team-high .571 as she recorded four kills and did not commit an error. As a team, Bucknell hit .147 for the match, while the Eagles tallied a .213 hitting percentage.
In the fourth game Bucknell streaked out to a 5-1 lead and appeared to have a chance to become the first Patriot League team to force a fifth game with American, but the Bison allowed the Eagles to go on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 7-7. From that point on the team's went back and forth with neither team leading by more than three points until American took a commanding 25-21 lead.
Bucknell continues Patriot League play next weekend as it makes its longest road trip of the year to Holy Cross and Army. The Bison will take on the Crusaders Friday, Oct. 15, and the Black Knights Saturday, Oct. 16. Friday's match will begin at 7 p.m., while the match against Army will start at 5 p.m.
