Penn Hits .413 in 3-0 Victory over Bison Volleyball

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Accurate hitting and a big block propelled visiting Penn to a three-game victory over Bucknell Tuesday evening in a non-league volleyball match in Davis Gym. The Quakers hit a whopping .413 with only five errors all night and out-blocked the Bison 13-1 en route to a 30-14, 30-17, 30-21 victory. Becky Fisher hit .357 with six kills for Bucknell, which fell to 11-9 on the season. Penn, led by 12 kills each from Michelle Kauffman and Laura Black, improved to 10-8. The Quakers raced to an 8-0 lead in the opening set and never looked back. They led by as many as 18 points at 28-10 and hit .429 in game one. Penn again started quickly in game two, taking a 10-3 lead following four consecutive blocks, three each from Lynzy Caton and Black. Bucknell played its best volleyball of the night in game three, rallying from 5-1 down to take an 8-7 lead on Chelsea Robertson's ace. Penn took the lead for good at 9-8 on Kauffman's solo block, but the Quakers did not put the game away until late. Leading 22-20, Penn finished the contest on an 8-1 run, with consecutive kills by Black ending the night. The Quakers hit .459 in the final frame. Penn finished with 48 kills and only five errors in 104 attempts, while holding Bucknell to .033 hitting. Black had just one error in 18 swings and hit .611, while Caton had seven kills without a miscue in 12 chances and hit at a .583 clip. Jenna Henderson led the Bison with seven kills to go with 10 digs, while Carolyn Dougherty tied for match-high honors with 13 digs. Bucknell returns exclusively to Patriot League play beginning this weekend, when Lehigh visits Davis Gym on Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by Lafayette on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Bison are 5-3 in conference play and in third place with six regular-season matches remaining.
