Bucknell Volleyball Rallies to Defeat Loyola, 3-2
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Shannon Walker pounded a match-high 24 kills to go with five blocks, and the Bucknell University volleyball team downed Loyola College (Md.) 3-2 on Senior Night in Davis Gym.
The Bison improved their record to 12-10 with the non-league victory, and Loyola fell to 5-22. Bucknell fell behind 1-0 and 2-1 in the match, but rallied to win the final two games. After jumping ahead 11-3 in game one, Bucknell saw its lead shrink to two (11-9) following a 6-0 Loyola run. The Bison maintained their slim advantage until a 5-0 Greyhound surge gave Loyola a 20-16 lead. Loyola held on to win the set 30-27, even after Bucknell drew to within one twice down the stretch. Bucknell turned things around in the second game, winning 30-17. The Bison hit a scorching .400 for the set while holding the Greyhounds to -.086 hitting. After leading 18-10, Bucknell broke open the set with a 7-0 surge that opened up a 25-10 BU lead. Loyola hit .375 in the third stanza and reclaimed the lead at 2-1 after a 30-27 win. A 6-0 Greyhound run gave the team an 11-7 edge, and Loyola held a 20-14 lead mid-way through the set. But the Bison fought back with an 11-4 run of their own mid-way through to cut the lead to go ahead 25-24. However, Loyola held off Bucknell 6-3 the rest of the way. Neither team led by more than three in the fourth set, and after trailing 24-23, Bucknell closed the game on a 7-3 run en route to a 30-27 win. The fifth and deciding game was just as tight, and Bucknell held a slim 10-9 lead before outscoring Loyola 5-2 down the stretch. The Bison limited the Greyhounds to .031 hitting in the pivotal set. Sophomore Brandi Trapasso totaled 17 kills and 15 digs for her 10th "double-double" of the season, while senior Whitney Williams notched her sixth "double-double" this year with 28 assists and 13 digs. Junior Melanie Ghiz turned in a pair of career-highs with 18 kills and a match-high seven blocks (four solo), and sophomore Breean Trapasso handed out 30 assists, also a career-high. Senior Angela Gano added 10 digs, while senior Kerri Bishop served up a match-high four service aces.
The Bison conclude the 2001 regular season this weekend when they visit Binghamton at 7 p.m. on Friday and Patriot League opponent Colgate on the same time Saturday evening.
