Bison Head Coach Cindy Opalski Involved in 'YES' Clinic
Feb. 3, 2003 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's volleyball head coach Cindy Opalski and freshman libero/outside hitter Chelsea Anderson participated along with some of the nation's most successful collegiate volleyball coaches and student-athletes when the NCAA conducted a youth clinic, Saturday, Dec. 21, at the University of New Orleans in New Orleans, LA. This was Coach Opalski's second time to be selected for this honor. "The NCAA provides a great venue for young people to get involved in the sport. I'm fortunate to be selected to be an ambassador for the sport of volleyball," Opalski remarked. The clinic was part of the NCAA Youth Education through Sports (YES) program. The clinic was conducted in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. The 'YES' clinic provided youth programming, which focused on participant development and the student-athlete mentoring program. The clinic consisted of three sessions: skill instruction, conditioning, and life skills. The life skills session allowed one-on-one interactive team-building activities. In the conditioning session participants learned various agilities and exercises unique to volleyball and exercises that addressed fitness in general. Coach Opalski and Anderson worked with youth on skill instruction. They used drills and games to teach the participants the fundamentals of the game. The skill level of the participants ranged from beginner to elite.
Over 260 youth attended the YES clinic, which took place in the Kiefer Lakefront Arena. The participants were also able to experience the NCAA Championship game and saw an exciting match between Stanford University and the University of Southern California.
