Bucknell Volleyball Announces 2009 Team Captains
May 6, 2009 LEWISBURG, Pa. - Rising seniors Allison Gittings (Dayton, Md./Glenelg) and Lindsay Smith (Lafayette, Colo./Monarch) have been voted Bucknell volleyball team captains for the 2009 season, head coach Cindy Opalski announced today. "We believe that these two experienced veterans will be tremendous captains for our team and will each lead in their own unique way," said Opalski. "We're relying on both of them to bring their own personal strengths to the challenge of leading our team while always considering what is in the best interest of the team. Our talent will only be amplified by our team chemistry, and the coaching staff is confident that Allison and Lindsay will help us to move forward to continue to maximize our potential, grow as a cohesive unit and lead our team to another Patriot League Championship." Gittings, who also served as a team captain last season, has played in 80 career matches heading into her final season in the Orange and Blue. The 5-9 setter has tallied 324 career assists, including a season-high 166 as a junior last year. She has also amassed 114, 12 blocks and 11 kills digs in her career. Off the court, Gittings has been named a Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member while majoring in psychology and minoring in biology. Smith, who has played a key supporting role at the net for the Bison throughout much of her career, has seen action in 53 matches. During that time the right side/middle hitter has totaled 55 career kills and 28 blocks. Smith's hard work in the Orange and Blue has paid off as she has improved her playing time from one start in 11 matches as a freshman to five starts in 24 matches last season. That hard work is evident in the classroom as well, as Smith's name can frequently be found on the Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll as a neuroscience major with a 3.77 cumulative grade-point average.
These two senior co-captains and the rest of the Bison can be seen in action when the 2009 season gets underway this August. |
