  • Shannon Pitsch's Take on Opening Weekend
  • After a tough weekend at CCSU, the team arrived at practice on Monday ready to work hard. We had learned a few lessons from the previous tournament, establishing which skills needed refining and where our mindset needed to be, and got right down to it. The work ethic and attitude in the gym was positive and enthusiastic. The team really put everything we had out on the court every practice.

As the end of the week neared, the excitement mounted. We were going to Chicago! We left for the airport Thursday afternoon to find our flight into Chicago had been delayed, but nothing could break our spirits. We arrived late Thursday night full of smiling faces and hungry stomachs! Fortunately, Shannon's parents had dinner waiting for the team at their Oak Brook home. After stuffing our stomachs with delicious Chicago food, we departed for the hotel to rest up for our games the following day.

We opened the tournament against the top-seeded Loyola Ramblers, a tall powerhouse from the Midwest. After a slow start, we finally found our rhythm and almost fought our way back into the match, barely losing the third game 24-26. The next match versus Evansville followed, and we struggled to execute our game plan, losing the match in three games. In the end, we left the gym Friday two matches down but heads held high. The tournament wasn't over yet, and we still had two more matches to show the Midwest how talented the team really is.

No words can describe our Saturday matches. We stepped onto the court and everything clicked. Our passing was consistent, our hitting effective, and our fight inspiring. We took the first two games in our match against UT Martin and were caught a little off guard when they came back to win the next two. But we accepted the challenge, winning the fifth game and our first match of the season!

After a quick sight-seeing stop at Lincoln Park and North Beach, we came back to the gym feeling relaxed, confident, and ready for another win. We beat Sam Houston in four games! The feeling was incredible and team really connected on a new level. To celebrate our victories, the team spent the evening at my house for some home-cooked food and a backyard bonfire. It was a great end to an even better weekend.
